Diabetes and Ayurveda Expert – Meet Dr Archana

We are pleased to welcome Dr Archana this week in our expert interview talk. Dr Archana is a Diabetes and Ayurveda expert with specialisation in the treatment of modern lifestyle health disorders through naturopathy, specifically with diet and lifestyle management. This is also the core philosophy of Medhya Herbals, where we endeavour to empower people with knowledge and tools for the management of their health in a holistic manner. Ayurveda is the oldest science of medicine has clearly prescribed the principles and basis of nearly everything our body and mind experiences out of its interactions with the surroundings. So, here we learn from the views of an Ayurveda expert on how to incorporate these principles in our respective lifestyles.

Tell us something about yourself.

I am born and brought up in Kerala, India. I began my journey with Ayurveda in 2006 as I studied Ayurvedic medicine for both graduation and post-graduation (MD).

After graduation, I worked as a Junior Consultant at Poornaayu Ayurveda Niketanam, Kerala. To further pursue my interest in Ayurveda, the science of life, I decided to specialise in Kayachikitsa, one of the superior stream among the eight branches of Ayurveda.

As it was my dream to serve and understand the problems of people who are suffering from lifestyle disorders, my focus was more on to Type II Diabetes Mellitus.  It was a platform to understand the day-to-day routines and diets making vast change in body’s mechanism. Hence, I specialised to be a Diabetes and Ayurveda Expert.

What are your areas of specialization and which segment do you currently work in?

In Ayurveda terminology, Kayachikitsa means to study the whole body and mind. Kaya means body and Chikitsa mean the appropriate treatment. I have specialized in Diagnosis & Management of diseases example, joint problems, gastric irritations, lifestyle disorders, scalp & hair issues etc. Also, I have studied the applicability of the Panchkarma in treating the diseases. During my studies and practice, I also got an opportunity to study the Nadi Pariksha (Pulse examination).

I concentrated my thesis study on the management of Type II Diabetes Mellitus with suitable medications and diet control. Presently I have dedicated more time to give advises and treatment of the same.

What excites you the most about your role/industry?

The present era is full of chaos, stress and strain due to lifestyle modifications, change in dietary habits, urbanization & industrialization. This has led in the upsurge of many diseases and one of them is Diabetes. Though Diabetes (Premeha) is a disease known since ancient times to mankind, however, its upsurge is quite alarming, especially at a very young age.

Irregular food habits, lack of exercise, stress and strain are some of the causative factors that make an individual more prone to develop Diabetes at an early age. During my practice, I have consulted and treated patients as young as in the early 20’s, who acquired Diabetes as a result of their lifestyle and not because of hereditary factors. This is quite heartbreaking.

However, at the same time, it is exciting for me to see positive results only by reverting to the new routines and changing food habits into our normal or ancient ones. It always gives satisfaction to see patients with good results after following Ayurvedic medications and diets.

What is your view on holistic health, wholesome nutrition, and an active lifestyle?

Ayurveda aims first to maintain the health of a person. To achieve this diet and nutrition are the prime criteria. To achieve a healthy body and mind a wholesome diet and active lifestyle is important.

What is the best advice you have gotten from your mentors/industry experts to upkeep with your health?

A healthy body is a sign of a healthy mind, hence maintaining physical fitness always necessary to achieve a wholesome mind. Grandmother’s recipes were the best of yesterday’s, today and tomorrow’s.
