Flax has rich nutritional profile and multiple health benefits!

Flaxseed is obtained from Flax, a member of genus Linum belonging to family Linaceae. It is a food crop as well as fiber crop. It is also known as “linseed”. Its oil is extracted from the seeds and linen from the stem. The seeds are sweet, oily and have a mild smell.

Ayurveda describes the characterstics of flax as sweet, bitter (rasa), hot (Veerya), pungent (Vipaka), heavy and sticky (Guna). It balances the vata dosha. Its stem, flower and seed are the useful parts as the stem gives linen from which linen clothes and fabric is made and its flower and seed is used as food. Flax has played a key role in Ayurvedic medicinal system since ages. It is prescribed in various foods and is also used as an ingredient in various Ayurvedic medicines. Flaxseed is one of the most underrated ingredient that has the quality to transform any food into impeccable taste.

Recipe Yummilicious – A bountiful Breakfast with flax and oatmeal

Ingredients

  • Oats
  • Blueberry
  • Lemon juice
  • Raw sugar
  • Butter
  • Milk
  • Salt
  • Chopped pecans
  • Roasted and ground flaxseeds

Preparation

Boil 3 cups of water. Add 5 spoons milk and 1 spoon butter. Let it simmer and add Oats to the mix. Cook till a uniform mix is obtained. Combine blueberries, chopped pecans, lemon juice, and sugar in a pan. Heat at medium for half to one minutes stirring every thirty seconds. Add this mix to the Oats porridge and enjoy!

Ingredients

  • Cooked Rice
  • Water
  • Flaxseeds
  • Turmeric
  • Green chilli
  • Salt and little sugar

Preparation

Fry the flax seeds in a hot pan for one minute. Put them in a mixer or grinder and turn the seeds into powder.  Mix the powder in a half cup cold water. Boil the water mix with green chilli, turmeric, salt and sugar in another container. Add the flaxseed mixture in boiled water and cook for 12-15minutes. Serve with steamy rice.

FLAXSEED SMOOTHIE

Ingredients

  • Bottle gourd
  • Flax seed
  • Cumin seed
  • Low-fat curd
  • Mint leaves
  • Salt

Preparation

Steam bottle gourd on low flame for couple of minutes. Let it cool down and then add to a grinder/mixer for a smooth textured drink. Add in rest of the ingredients and grind again. Freeze for an hour. Serve chilled.

Ingredients

  • Whole wheat flour. Other cereals can be added such as Ragi, Bajra, Besan, or even whole corn flour. Having gluten such as wheat will help in binding for the roti. In case, you want gluten free version, please make a thin batter with the mix and make pan cakes instead.
  • Flaxseeds
  • Onion
  • Green Chilli
  • Coriander
  • Salt
  • Vegetable oil

Preparation

Make a dough of wheat flour. Add onion, green chilli, coriander and make a flatten dough. Add flaxseeds now and flatten the dough in chapati form.  Serve with raita, curd and pickles.
