In our first interview of the series “What experts say and like”, we are super excited to share our conversation with yoga guru Swati Singh. Swati is a certified yoga instructor in Singapore and a loving mother of 2 young boys. She has been practicing and teaching yoga for past 7 years. Swati specialises in varied styles of yoga including Hatha, Vinayasa, Yin, Pranayama, and also for treating backaches. So, here we go! Learn more about Swati and what are her top tips to maintain the best state of health.

Tell us something about yourself. How did you start in the industry, how many years, what’s your background.

I stumbled (literally) upon yoga 7 years ago. I run regularly and was looking for some options to stretch and strengthening exercises on my rest days. I took my first yoga class in a gym studio. With a passion for fitness and being an avid runner, I always thought yoga would be fun and easy. After my first class, I found it was not as easy as I imagined but the true surprise was the sense of peace and joy I found. I went on to do 200 hours of teacher training in 2010 (RYS-200 Singapore) and received a diploma in Yoga(RYT 200) in December of 2010. I have also received a certificate in backache management using Yoga.

What are your areas of specialization and which segment do you currently work in.

I teach Hatha, Vinayasa, Restorative, Breathing & Meditation in my classes. I prepare my classes depending on the requirements of the students, so sometimes it would be a dynamic flow of yoga poses and other times practicing and mastering the styles/poses.

Pranayama and Meditation are essential pillars of my classes. Currently, I am working on Chakra meditation class which will be available very soon.

What excites you the most about your role/industry?

One thing that excites me the most is to be able to motivate others to show up on the mat every week. To keep my students going, I incorporate various sequencing styles. This requires me to challenge my existing teaching ways and hence be creative in each and every session I take.

Being a person, who appreciates positivity, I really like to share my thoughts and learn from others on being creative, productive, and hence growing in life. Yoga classes give me chance to meet extremely talented and great people from different spheres of life and it excites me a lot!

What is your view on holistic health, wholesome nutrition, and an active lifestyle?

I love eating nutritious and wholesome food. I cook at home for family and maintain an active lifestyle. In modern times, where people have highly stressful jobs and stagnant lifestyle, any form of exercise and sports would help to destress. Not only will there be benefits in terms of improvised physique and stamina, but also one would become mentally stronger and more alert when you engage in physical activity.

What is the best advise you have gotten from your mentors/industry experts to upkeep with your health?

Practice, Patience, and don’t give up! Connect with your breath and enjoy the present moment! 

Yoga specially has made me more patient and calm than ever. It has also given me clarity of thoughts and a sense of determination of my pursuits!

How do you maintain your health and your lifestyle?

I run 3 times a week and practice yoga (apart from classes) 3-4 times a week. Additionally I do strength training twice a week. For food, I eat healthy and home cooked meals. I consume everything in moderation and love chocolates!!

Which are your favorite foods, places to eat, places to travel?

I love Japanese and French cuisine! My favourite places to eat are Shinji at Raffles (Its divine!) and Les Amis. For places to travel, I love Bali in SE Asia, France and Austria in Europe.

Please share a quick super nutritious recipe to power yourself during demanding days.

I stock vegetables in my refrigerator nearly all the time! My go to recipe is stirfry/steamed veggies with quinoa and spinach on the side. Not only it is super quick to make but also a well balanced portion on all essential nutrients I need for a super busy day!

Please share a wellness and fitness tip that you employ on daily basis to stay in shape and be active.

I try to give myself at least 30 minutes everyday either for yoga, run, or for strength train. My advise would be to choose any exercise form you like but be consistent with it. Set it a priority in life and you will find time for it!

Which is your favorite food ingredient and how do you use it the most?

I love avocados and sweet potatoes! They find a place in my sandwiches and salads nearly every time.

We come across multiple stressful situations on daily basis as working professionals and in society. What is your favourite way to release tension and relax?

Meditation! I give myself at least 10 minutes everyday to relax and focus inwards. Trust me it does wonders!!

What would you advise our audience to stay healthy while pursuing modern lifestyle?

Eat well, exercise, and rest enough, and take some time off your daily routine for yourself. And in those couple of minutes you set aside for yourself, do what you love doing the most.
