Personal Trainer and Lifestyle Coach – Meet Jimmie L. Read

We are super thrilled to welcome Jimmie Read this week in Medhya’s series on “expert interviews”. Jimmie is a personal trainer and lifestyle coach in Singapore. She has been enabling women and transforming their lives through her unique approach of introducing a lifestyle that would charge them up mentally and physically. Herself a holistic lifestyle enthusiast, Jimmie started her journey as a personal trainer and has been adding on skills, experiences, lifetime stories since then. So, here is our chance to learn from her experiences and get the best lifestyle tips from her!

Tell us something about yourself. 

Just after I moved to Singapore 12 years ago, I obtained my Personal Training certification. This seemed to go well with my B.Sc. in Health Education and my many years as a Massage Therapist. I was surprised how well it all fit together so beautifully. About 6 years ago, I received training as a Life Coach so I could give my clients a more powerful experience. I love what I do and am passionate about the process.

What are your areas of specialization and which segment do you currently work in. 

Currently, and for the past 10 years, I’ve been working with women at a women’s training studio, Body Temple. It has and still has the philosophy of empowering the whole woman. I utilize all of my education in nutrition, strength training, life coaching, and body work.

What excites you the most about your role/industry? 

Possibility, awareness and potential. In the work we do, people become aware of themselves, their body, mind and spirit. This opens up doors of possibility that they thought were closed or hadn’t thought of yet. This then leads to accessing the person’s potential, which is the most important goal. I see the industry as a whole heading in this direction and I am thrilled. 

What is your view on holistic health, wholesome nutrition, and an active lifestyle? 

Bring it on! Balance is key. Life is constantly changing so we need to create foundations we can rely on such as a healthy body, open mind, and a curious attitude. This allows us to respond to situations with greater ease and recover faster.

What is the best advise you have gotten from your mentors/industry experts to upkeep with your health? 

Make time to learn new things every day, not just in your industry but the things that you are personally passionate about.

Be the change you want to see.

And Love. Love yourself. Love life. See the goodness all around you.

How do you maintain your health and your lifestyle? 

I’m not much different from my clients. I have challenging times but one has to focus on the results and use strategies to achieve your goals. Such as keeping a log and using the buddy system for workouts because everyone needs accountability. I eat healthy most of the time because it tastes good and I appreciate how it helps my body function better.

Which are your favourite foods, places to eat, places to travel? 

Any restaurant that serves organic foods, where they take the time to prepare it with integrity and care are my favourites. These include some of my snacks from Medhya Herbals, lots of good things at Balanced Living Asia, and Kazbar near Church Street where they focus on quality. 

I love traveling to places where exercise is built into the holiday. Like hiking in beautiful Nepal!

Please share a quick super nutritious recipe to power yourself during demanding days. 

My breakfast! I prepare about 5 containers of dry ingredients: oats, dates, walnuts, cinnamon, ground flax seed, and two spoons of Medhya’s Revitalize. The night before, I add kefir milk or water and put it in the fridge. In the morning, it’s ready and delicious!

Please share a wellness and fitness tip that you employ on daily basis to stay in shape and be active. 

Have fun and laugh during your workouts. It’s much more enjoyable and increases the endorphins. 

Try something a little scary or challenging. Once you’ve done it and accomplished it, you feel proud! 

Play with your children by giving them rides on your back, lifting them in the air, etc. They love it and will always remember how good it felt.

Which is your favourite food ingredient and how do you use it the most? 

Nuts. I like to eat a lot of plant based meals and love adding nuts to the meal.

We come across multiple stressful situations on daily basis as working professionals and in society. What is your favourite way to release tension and relax? 

First, I try to look at my attitude toward the stressful situation. My perception of life is where I have control. Adding meditation to my daily routine has changed my experience. I feel a lot more joy now. 

What would you advise our audience to stay healthy while pursuing modern lifestyle? 

A young man once asked an old man “How do I live a long and healthy life?” He responded “By living a long and healthy life.”

Live with integrity and resist comforts of compromise.
